Do you know what a makerspace is? Let’s talk about it and how you can have one in your school for your students...
WHAT IS A MAKERSPACE?
“A Makerspace is more than a space itself, it is a mindset that can and should be taught” (Gerstein, 2014).
I also heard once that a “makerspace is a place where DIY meets education” and I love this definition as well. Can you imagine a space full of tools, from high-tech to no-tech, where everybody is welcome to come and use? Well, a Makerspace goes way beyond that! Tools do make a great Makerspace, but the community is what supports it. It is the meeting point of like-minded people trying to prototype ways to make their own community a better place. Now, try to imagine the wonders of having a space like this in your school, a space where students can learn and understand things while actually making them. It’s a dream come true for me!
Thomas Maker is my makerspace. It is where I go to learn and to teach.
SO, A MAKERSPACE IS A MAGICAL SPACE, RIGHT?
And I know it isn’t easy to set up a Makerspace in every school in the world. Still, you can set up a space for making in your school very easily.
In order to help schools have these spaces and some tools to start working with maker-centered activities, we started this project with the maker kits.
The kits were designed to help you build your Maker Corner wherever you open the boxes. You won’t need anything beyond the material there unless you really want more. However, it helps TO HAVE A SPACE TO UNBOX all this content. Try to find a place in your school with large tables, such as the Library.
If it isn’t possible, you can rearrange the desks to create workstations in your classroom.
The kits were also designed to provide you with the suitable tools you might need (like the needles in the Funny Felt Creatures kit).
However, if you decide to incorporate extra material (such as recyclables), you may want to have a box with scissors, glue and other materials to help students interact with them.
